The rare and lesser-spotted Poisonous Goon...

We last left you, dear reader, with the riveting story of Fiona being stung. You'll be glad to know she's ok, and has not complained about it since (or has been in the water!)
That was 9 days ago - we know, we're sorry - and what a busy time we've had. On the evening of the 5th, we headed to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (which holds 100,000 people!) to see the Twenty20 International between Australia and Pakistan. I'm not a big fan of cricket, but this was a seriously good game - coming right down to the final few balls. A real nail-biter, and Australia eventually won! It was so good, I may even watch Cricket again!
Quite a lazy day on the 6th, we hit our favourite coffee house and job hunted with no real success, had a walk around Arthur's Park where the Melbourne F1 Grand Prix will be held in March and then lay on the beach for an hour or so. We got some free food at the hostel (part of the package we originally purchased in Britain) then moved our stuff to our new hostel, in the centre of Melbourne. It was above an Irish Bar, but far too expensive for us to frequent often (sadly). This gave us a chance to see more of the city without taking the 30 minute tram ride.
The 7th was our day of pilgrimage. No, not religious (though it practically could be) - we visited Ramsey St! It was crazy, it felt so familiar. People live in the houses and they film during the day when everyone is at work - which meant we didn't get to see it all happening, but it was good fun seeing the houses and hearing how it all happens. In the bus, we watched Madge and Harold's Wedding on the way there (a golden oldie, with Scott and Charlene, Henry etc) and Toadie and Dee's Wedding on the way home.
That didn't take all day, so when we got back we went down into the bar to listen to the owners Irish band. It was excellent, a good singsong and he even played some Scottish tunes (I didn't get homesick...honest) including a rousing rendition of Flower of Scotland (not that it helped much, France kicked our asses). Finished the day with a walk around Melbourne at night - very pretty city with all the lights on.
The 8th was our Great Ocean Road tour. We started very early in the morning but it was worth it. The drive took us to some wonderful beaches (12 Apostles, London Bridge) and we saw some Koalas when we stopped to have lunch. My favourite beach was the final one where we actually got to paddle. The water was so clear and the beach was so warm - I could have stayed there for days. Not much point in explaining it in the blog, you'll just have to wait for the pictures!
On the 9th we spent the day wandering around Melbourne. We saw the town hall, the parliament and lazed around in the sun in the park. Dinner was a quick pizza before we hopped on the bus for our overnight trip to Canberra. The bus was much better than we were expecting after horrendous buses in the USA - it was comfortable, clean and air-conditioned. Although we didn't get any sleep on the bus, it was very comfortable and easy and I reckon we'll do it again.
We arrived in Canberra at 4:30am on the 10th, got ourselves into the hostel and had a quick shower then walked round to visit a flat we'd seen on Gumtree. It was perfect! Double bed, en-suite with spa, really nice flatmate (Drew, 30, Area Manager for a set of menswear shops) good location, big TV and PS3. We also found out we'd have another flatmate, Penny, who works in the treasury department. We took it there and then, and with a bounce in our step we walked back into Canberra and began looking for work.
Sadly, we've not had any luck yet - but we've moved into the flat and are very happy and comfortable. It's the 14th now and we've spent the day hungover after some drinks last night with Drew and Kiera, a girl we knew from OTC. Fingers crossed we'll get something next week!
As for what Goon is? It's what we got drunk on last night - it's the nickname given to boxed wine here. £5.50 for 4.4L of wine, drunk between three of us. Oops.
